Midwives work closely with the families they serve. The relationship that develops between client and caregiver fosters unique insight in determining the individual needs of these clients. Therefore, midwives refer and work in collaboration with other professionals to meet these needs. They recommend childbirth educators and doulas to families that can benefit from the extra support they offer during childbirth. They refer to OB/GYNs, Perinatologists, Chiropractors, and other health care professionals as needed in keeping pregnancy normal risk or transferring care when pregnancy becomes complicated. Pediatricians and Breast Feeding Consultants are regularly referred to in the postpartum period. These are just a few examples of the professional relationships that midwives have during the childbearing year. Becoming a member helps to promote midwifery as an emerging and legitimate profession in Louisiana so that together, we can best meet the needs of childbearing families.
